Wellcome Trust : Wellcome Collection Face Capture installation

The Wellcome Collection is a major new public venue for London. We were asked to design and produce interactive installations that would intrigue visitors and cause users to question preconceived ideas of biomedical data and what it means to be human.

Our Solution

One of the exhibits is the world’s first fully automated ‘facial-average generator’ which uses a combination of facial-recognition and morphing software. We worked with facial recognition experts Betaface to create software that can pick out eye, nose and mouth positions in the captured image. The software then moves them to the statistically average position. Once this is done this new image is blended with all previous participants to create an “average visitor’s face” - by combining this with personal data, the software can create more specific average faces of smaller groups: the average vegetarian face, smoker or drinker for example. The installation therefore becomes more interesting as more people use it, allowing us to create ever more specific groups.
